Before we start, an uncomfortable truth: if you're applying to openings and getting no response, the most likely problem isn't that your profile is weak.

The most likely problem is that your resume never reaches human hands.

Most resumes sent to roles at mid-size and large companies are filtered by automated systems (ATS, applicant tracking systems) before a recruiter ever sees them. And the ones that do reach a recruiter get between 6 and 8 seconds to catch attention. Not 6 minutes. Six seconds.

These are the 5 mistakes I see from the other side of the desk, ordered by impact.

Mistake #1: Leading with your education

The most common mistake and the most expensive one. Many of us were taught to open a resume with "Education" or "Academic background."

The problem: when a recruiter opens your resume, the first thing they see is where you studied 10 years ago. And nothing about what you can do now.

The rule: the information most relevant to the role goes at the top. If you have more than 3 years of experience, that's Experience, not Education.

A structure that works in 2026:

  1. Contact details + LinkedIn
  2. Headline / professional summary (3 lines max)
  3. Experience (your last 3-4 roles)
  4. Skills
  5. Education
  6. Certifications and languages

Mistake #2: Descriptions that say nothing

Look at these two descriptions of the same role:

Generic version (the one I get every day):

"Responsible for the sales team. In charge of coordinating, training and supervising staff."

Version that gets noticed:

"Led a team of 12 across 3 locations. Grew sales 34% in 18 months by redesigning the prospecting process. Trained 8 people who were later promoted internally."

What changed? Three things:

You don't need to have transformed the company. You need to show that what you did had measurable consequences. If you can't recall them off the top of your head, go dig them up — because they're there.

Mistake #3: Photo, personal details and over-designed layouts

This one varies by country, but the general rule in 2026:

Details that do NOT belong:

Photo:

Design:

Resumes with very flashy design (Canva templates with icons, multiple columns, big photos) fail in ATS because the system can't parse the information. Pretty on screen, empty in the system.

Mistake #4: Not tailoring the resume to the role

I know it's tedious. But it's the difference between landing interviews and not.

I'm not saying "rewrite the whole resume for every application." I'm saying:

  1. Read the job posting and underline the 5-7 words or phrases that keep coming up ("stakeholder management," "SaaS experience," "working with remote teams," etc.)
  2. Edit your professional summary to include 2-3 of those phrases if they're true about you
  3. Reorder the bullets in your experience so the ones most relevant to the role sit at the top
  4. Adjust the headline / title of the resume to reflect the role you're applying for

Total time: 10 minutes per application. ROI: 3-5x more interviews, in my experience with clients.

Mistake #5: Trying to be everything to everyone

A resume with 15 skills listed, 3 different industries, "open to opportunities in marketing, sales, operations and product management."

What the recruiter reads: "this person doesn't know what they want or what they're best at."

Your resume needs a clear focus. One question a recruiter can answer in 6 seconds: "What kind of role is this person for?"

If you have a varied background (which is normal, not a problem), your job is to curate that experience for the role you're applying to. Experience that doesn't connect can be summed up in one line, or left off entirely.

How to fix it (in order)

If you can only change 3 things today:

  1. Reorder the structure. Experience at the top, education at the bottom.
  2. Rewrite 3 bullets from your most recent role with action verbs + numbers.
  3. Remove the photo, the unnecessary personal details, and the multi-column design.

Just that will noticeably raise your response rate.
