LinkedIn checklist for career coaches.

10 things your LinkedIn profile needs to go from "I get referrals" to "they find me on their own".

5 min read 30 min to implement Score at the end

An honest review of the average profile shows that most coaches fall short on the same points.

This is the short list — check all 10 and you're in the top 5% of coaches on LinkedIn.

1

Face forward, no corporate backdrop

A genuine smile, clothes you'd actually wear to a session — a suit if you coach C-levels, casual if you coach creatives. A neutral or outdoor background.
Avoid: logos, filtered selfies, group photos, office backdrops.
2

A headline that says "who for" and "what you solve"

"Career Coach & Consultant"
"I help professionals in transition land roles they love · 5+ years in tech" Formula: I help [who] to [outcome] · [short credential]
3

An About in 3 paragraphs (not 10 generic lines)

  • Paragraph 1: the specific problem you solve
  • Paragraph 2: how you solve it (your method, no jargon)
  • Paragraph 3: a CTA — "if you're in X situation, send me a message"
4

One post per week (minimum)

Not viral reels. Real observations from your practice: "Today I had a session with a director who told me X", "3 things I saw this week in manager resumes", "Why quitting your job before you have the next one almost never works".
5

A Featured section with 3 things

  • A client case (anonymized)
  • A link to your process (Calendly or a landing page)
  • The post people saved the most
6

Testimonials in Experience, not hidden away

Every happy client = one recommendation requested. It should be visible in your experience section. Not buried in "recommendations" that no one opens.
7

200+ first-degree connections in your niche

If you coach tech → connect with Senior Managers, Directors, and VPs at tech companies. LinkedIn recommends contacts based on your network — make it relevant.
8

Calendly visible (headline, about, featured)

When a potential client reaches out, you want to reduce friction. "Book 15 min here → [link]" in your first message lowers the barrier dramatically.
9

Engagement on your target audience's posts

15 min/day commenting on posts from the directors you want to hire you. Substantive comments — not "Great post!". This is most of your organic growth on LinkedIn.
10

A custom URL with your clean name

linkedin.com/in/janesmithlinkedin.com/in/jane-smith-4a72b9
The second one screams "my nephew set up my LinkedIn".
